My research interests are focused on evaluating the clinical performance of x-ray medical imaging technologies, especially those in computed tomography (CT). Examples of such technologies include novel image reconstruction algorithms, dual-energy CT, spectral CT, and photon counting x-ray detectors. I am interested in the clinical translation of these technologies for achieving maximum image quality in clinical imaging exams while maintaining control of radiation exposure risk. I am also interested in imaging informatics approaches in evaluating the performance of imaging systems and protocols. My research includes use of image processing techniques to evaluate metrics of image quality in clinical exam data.

A potential student project would establish performance benchmarks for new clinical imaging technology. The student would learn how to configure and test CT imaging protocols, and apply methods in standardizing imaging performance across different CT scanners. Another potential project would establish novel methods of measuring image quality metrics including noise in soft tissues, organ and vessel contrast, patient motion and other artifacts. The student would gain exposure to digital workflow of clinical imaging data, familiarity with (DICOM) standards in image communication and archival, and apply advanced image processing techniques.
