FUNDING POLICY

MS and SMS Students

Students can be (a) Self-funded; or (b) Funded by a Sponsor (Faculty, Advisor, or Department).

If a Sponsor wishes to fund a student, they can provide the following level of financial support:

  • Fund the student's tuition & required fees (T&F); and
  • Fund the student a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) salary plus benefits.  Stipend Level (gross salary) permitted can be between $24,000/year to $32,000/year.

Students can qualify for resident in-state T&F rate if the student:

  • Is offered a GSBS Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) title position; or
  • Receives a competitive scholarship of $1,000 or more within the academic year.
MS and SMS students who receive GRA funding cannot undertake outside activities, including employment of any kind.
Students who receive a paid GRA appointment are considered to be half-time (50%) student employees of the State.  Thus GRA's must follow all applicable employment policies of the institution in which they are appointed (UTHealth or UT MD Anderson).
