UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO STUDENTS

The Program partners with the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) College of Medicine to train MD/PhD students, supported in part through a U54 award from the National Cancer Institute awarded to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). The goal of the training program is to bring outstanding medical students from the UPR College of Medicine to MDACC, as an initial step toward becoming physician scientists. The long term goal of the MDACC U54 grant is to eliminate disparities in cancer outcomes between patient populations in the US and Puerto Rico. These students receive their medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico and complete their PhD dissertation research at the GSBS, as part of the degree requirements for a Ph.D. degree granted by GSBS. While here, UPR students are fully integrated into the MD/PhD Program with assigned MD/PhD Committee advisors and joint classes with the MD/PhD Program students.
