Blood donations needed during COVID-19 shelter in place

GSBS and UTHealth Public Affairs

As the COVID-19 virus continues to spread, our city is seeing a decrease in blood donations. At this crucial time, we ask for your help in continuing to educate our  community about the importance of blood donations. One donation can save up to 3 lives. It will be people like us who are healthy and able to donate who can save patients’ lives. To meet the needs of the Greater Houston area, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center must collect about 800 donations a day.

The City of Houston is allowing donors to attend blood drives during the shelter in place. Donation centers have been scheduled and set up around the city to make travel minimal for donors. All donation centers are by appointment only.

Please make sure you sign up for an appointment online and have your confirmation available to show when you arrive.

You can also donate blood at MD Anderson Blood Bank. Visit for complete details

The Blood Center serves more than 170 hospitals and health care organizations in the Texas Medical Center and surrounding counties. As part of miscellaneous leave (HOOP 185), a UTHealth employee is eligible for up to four blood donation times each fiscal year with pay and with documentation.
