Community Outreach Group connects science with the community

July 01, 2026 By: Shelli Manning, MLA/The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

The Graduate School's Community Outreach Group is helping make science more accessible across the Greater Houston area — one experiment, conversation, and community event at a time.

Led by graduate student officers Amanda Warner, president; Munazza Khan, vice president; Ericka Humphrey, secretary; Shannon Erhardt, treasurer; and Mirrah Bashir, media relations officer, the Community Outreach Group partners with local schools, museums, and community organizations to bring hands-on science experiences to learners of all ages. Together with student volunteers, members lead activities ranging from DNA extraction and genetics demonstrations to STEM nights and science festivals.

"Outreach really plants a seed of curiosity in young minds about science and the world around us," said Warner.

The group enjoys extending science beyond the bench, giving graduate students opportunities to strengthen their science communication, leadership, and community engagement skills while introducing young learners to potential careers in biomedical science.
