As the new dean of MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, I’m honored to work with our outstanding students, faculty, and staff to advance the school into the next frontier of biomedical research. I’m also thrilled to be joining the school during its 60th anniversary year. It is an opportune time for us to collectively propel MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School to new heights as a powerhouse of research education.
Our Graduate School has a rich history of providing an innovative and collaborative academic environment that provides students with access to basic and translational scientific programs to turn discovery into life-saving solutions. It offers an unprecedented breadth of opportunities for outstanding graduate students to train with leading researchers from our parent institutions, MD Anderson and UTHealth Houston.
I look forward to working with them, and I—like the leaders before me—will continue to leverage their joint support to ensure our school remains at the forefront of biomedical graduate education excellence.
I’m also excited to collaborate with students and faculty in interprofessional teams to elevate our national standing and global presence. Looking forward, we’ll remain committed to tracking national and international trends in graduate education, aligning our programs to equip our students with the essential competencies required to support the use of medicine and health technologies over the next 10 to 20 years.
While I will be working closely with students, faculty, and staff to spotlight the school’s successes in science, I also aim to collaborate with alumni and supporters to help showcase our school’s unique attributes. It was amazing to see the unbelievable support for students from the Graduate School community during my visits to the school, and I’m happy to continue to cultivate this culture during my tenure.
I want to emphasize to our students and faculty that I’m here for you. If you have any questions or if there's anything you need, please feel free to reach out.
Sincerely,
Alejandro Aballay, PhD
Dean, MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School
