For 21 years, Karen Weinberg, MS, has helped shape The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) through steady leadership, deep institutional knowledge, and a genuine commitment to the people around her. This year, she was among the recipients of the UTHealth Houston President’s Award for Leadership, earning recognition in the category of Outstanding Management/Administrative Professional.

Nominated by the GSBS staff, and selected by UTHealth Houston President Melina R. Kibbe, Weinberg was recognized March 5 at UTHealth Houston’s annual STAR Awards luncheon, which celebrates employee service and university-wide honors.

As associate dean for management, Weinberg plays a central role in the day-to-day operations of the Graduate School, supporting students, faculty, and staff while helping guide the institution through continued growth and change. Colleagues describe her as a steady, solutions-oriented leader whose approach strengthens both the school’s operations and its sense of community.

“Karen is always positive, approachable, and eager to help, often well beyond her formal responsibilities,” said Dean Alejandro Aballay, PhD. “She handles complex administrative and operational matters seamlessly, and her solutions-oriented approach has a real impact on how well the school functions day to day.”

Shaping a culture of collaboration and support

Weinberg’s impact has been evident throughout her career at the Graduate School. Former Operations and Student Affairs Program Manager Cheryl “Spitz” Spitzenberger, who retired after 46 years at UTHealth Houston (40 at the Graduate School) and worked alongside Weinberg since the beginning of her tenure, recalled her early promise and lasting influence.

“Karen’s enthusiasm, team-oriented style, and commitment to excellence made her stand out from the start,” Spitz said. “Her positive attitude and dedication to helping others have had a lasting impact on the Graduate School.”

Many colleagues echoed their appreciation for Weinberg’s supportive approach, pointing to the encouraging culture she has helped to shape and sustain. Among them:

“GSBS is known to have a very positive workplace environment, and I believe Karen’s leadership is a big part of that,” said Admissions and Alumni Affairs Coordinator Andreina Ruiz.

“Karen genuinely wants others to succeed,” added Special Events Coordinator Leigh Robinson, one of the Graduate School’s newer employees. “She makes those around her feel valued and supported.”

That combination of leadership and care has helped foster a workplace where people feel connected to their work — and to one another.

“To know that my contributions are valued by the GSBS team is deeply meaningful,” Weinberg said. “GSBS has been my home for more than 20 years, and I’m fortunate to work alongside such a great group of colleagues.”

Established in 2006, the President’s Awards for Leadership recognize UTHealth Houston faculty and staff who exemplify integrity, service, and effective leadership. Selected through a peer nomination and review process, the awards highlight individuals whose contributions strengthen the university community and advance its mission.
