Meet the Staff: Elizabeth Murphy
June 17, 2024 By: Elizabeth Murphy/MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School
Elizabeth Murphy joined the staff at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in May. She is a 2019 graduate of the University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in communications. In her new role as communications assistant, she will support the Graduate School’s social media initiatives and write content for the school’s website and newsletter. When she’s not posting or writing about the latest GSBS news, Elizabeth enjoys writing her own fiction and doing Pilates – she even got her instructor certification earlier this year! Keep reading for more on the newest member of our team.
What is your current title, and what do you do day-to-day?
My title is communications assistant, and every day is different! If we have an event, you’ll find me getting content for social media. If a student or faculty member just won an award, I’m working on a story to spotlight that achievement. I also work on our newsletter The Essential, keeping us all up to date on what’s happening at the GSBS.
Are you working on any upcoming projects?
I’m gearing up for Graduate Student Research Day.
What excites you the most about working for the GSBS?
I love that I get to be a part of an organization that’s doing such important work, and that I help spotlight the incredible research done by our students and faculty.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Yes! I love to write my own fiction, and I’m currently working on a children’s book about sea animals.
What skills do you find most valuable in your work?
Writing is a skill that I use every day. I took a lot of journalism and professional writing classes in college, and I like getting the chance to flex my writing muscle.
Do you have a favorite memory at the GSBS so far?
Yes! In my second week, MD Anderson brought therapy dogs to our office as part of a workplace wellness program. Petting dogs at work is something I’m going to remember for a long time!
