My expertise is in the field of brain fatty acid regulation and metabolism. The goals of my research are to further investigate sympathetic function as it relates to brain ischemia and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in hopes to develop novel therapies. We are currently very interested in protein arginine methyltransferase in the central nervous system as regulators of membrane phospholipids. I have been committed to the enhancement of fatty acid research in the field of neuroscience and brain metabolism for decades. I have dedicated my research career to investigation of the cerebral vasculature with a focus on stroke, brain injury, and more recently AD/ADRD, and fatty acid metabolism.  We discovered that fatty acid methyl esters are biologically active components involved in brain circulation and signaling. Recently, we have uncovered various roles of protein arginine methyltransferases in the brain. These can have direct consequences affecting mitochondrial function, regulation of inflammation, and functional/behavioral deficits with stroke and aging. Coupled with my expertise in fatty acids and protein arginine methyltransferases in the brain, I am confident that we will uncover other novel aspects of these enzymes (i.e., arginine methylators, lipid mediators), which are still largely unknown have direct implications in brain injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. I am excited to participate in the GSBS graduate program.  I have mentored many students, fellows, and faculty over the years, and I am happy to serve as a mentor.
