Event Description
UTHealthLEADS is a student fellowship program to develop tomorrow’s leaders in healthcare and biomedical science, today. Students will learn how to lead themselves, lead others, and lead in systems.
Selected fellows will gain a better understanding of:
- Leadership competencies
- Leadership styles
- Leadership roles in healthcare and academic medical centers
- How their professional identities can shape their leadership
- Conflict resolution
Who is eligible?
Full-time students in good standing. Students may be a members of any class year who demonstrate potential and/or advanced leadership qualities. Both MS and PhD students are encouraged to apply! Students with appointments in both UTHealth Houston and MD Anderson labs are eligible to participate.

How many students will be selected?
This year, UTHealthLeads will accept a total of 24 students – 4 students will be from the GSBS.
How will students be selected?
An internal GSBS selection committee will review nominees and will nominate 4 students to represent the GSBS. Attributes that UTHealthLeads has requested include:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Well-rounded CV
- Other attributes considered are honesty, confidence, passion, commitment, empathy, creativity, and resilience, along with possessing strong active listening skills
- The program will have:
One lunch and learn per month varying with sessions and local leaders (1-2 hours per lunch and learn) - 1-2 meeting with a leadership coach
- Some minimal outside required activities and readings
- Serve in one of the following initiatives:
- Pathways Into Health Care Conference
- Collaborate with a team of six to organize and facilitate the pre-health conference for undergraduates and/or lead a workshop.
- Engaging Health Professions
- Lead a workshop for 3rd-12th grade students that includes but is not limited to airway intubation, suturing, school tour, student panel, anatomy lab, blood pressure, etc.
- UTHealth Houston Cares
- Collaborate with a team of six to organize and facilitate the UTHealth Houston Cares health fair. Provides the opportunity to put their experience into action (with guidance from experts and connect with the community).
- Student Financial Services Student Advisory Committee
- Serve on this committee to send a short survey and/or host a focus group at their respective school to hear about student financial services' concerns. Then, they would present those results to the Student Financial Services Student Advisory Committee and assist in disseminating the changes resulting from the council.
- Pathways Into Health Care Conference
- Lead a workshop with your school UTHealth Houston Leads reps at the UTHealth Houston Resource Conference based on what you’ve learned through this fellowship
- Complete capstone project
Attendance at lunch-and-learns, coaching sessions, and all related events is required in person (virtual attendance is not permitted).
Where will the sessions be held?
All sessions (meetings, coaching, etc.) will be facilitated at rotating locations within the Texas Medical Center.
Will there be a capstone project?
Yes, there will be a required capstone project involving an informational interview of the Dean and two additional leaders of the student’s school.
What are you looking for in a student candidate?
We are looking for emerging student leaders. Please keep in mind that this does not mean they have to be students already in a leadership role rather, individuals who have prospects of developing into a great leader.
Additionally, we’d like:
- A thoughtful essay on the topic 'What type of leader do you aspire to be? What goals must you meet to accomplish this? How are you working to achieve those goals?'
- Someone with good verbal and written communication skills
- A well-rounded CV
- Quality attributes one would look for in a leader such as: honesty, inspiration, confidence, passion, commitment, empathy, creativity, resilient, open-minded, patience, humility, purposeful, trustworthiness, and a good listener
What is the cost?
NO out-of-pocket costs for students or schools. UTHealthLeads is funded through the UTHealth President’s Office.
