Cheryl 'Spitz' Spitzenberger has been with the Graduate School since 1978! She began her career in data processing, and she now serves as the program manager for operations and student affairs. Keep reading to learn more about Spitz and her role!
What is your current title, and what do you do day-to-day?
I'm the program manager for operations and student affairs. I work closely with the Graduate School student associations and the career development team, plus alumni affairs. I share the 504 coordinator duties with Natalie Sirisaengtaksin, PhD. I also handle many of the Mitchell BSRB-related issues.
Are you working on any upcoming projects?
I'm assisting the incoming officers in our GSBS student associations with their transitions into leadership roles for academic year 2024-2025, and I am also working with the GSBS Admissions team to prepare for Orientation Week.
What excites you the most about working at the Graduate School?
Watching our students excel! Showcasing their amazing work during June's Graduate Student Research Day is always an annual highlight. And I continue to be blown away when I am able to attend a student's defense.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Some of my hobbies include cooking, playing the guitar, and singing, and I love to read. I wish I could say I still play tennis!
What skills do you find most valuable in your work?
I think my networking skills get used almost daily! I've been around so long that I've been able to build relationships all over campus -- at both MD Anderson and UTHealth Houston. Contacting a friendly colleague for advice (or maybe a tiny favor) has saved the day on so many occasions. I'm grateful to work with such wonderful people.
Do you have a favorite memory at the Graduate School?
There are a million memories over the last 40 years -- they include members of our staff (past and present), faculty, and, of course, students.
