Meet the Staff: Tanieka Young

As program manager for student affairs, Tanieka Young, MBA, MSHRD, manages recruitment and outreach. She is passionate about student development, and her favorite part of her job is helping develop future leaders.

What do you do day-to-day in your role?

I lead recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts. I also manage The Academy – Initiative to Maximize Student Development (IMSD) program, which focuses on creating a supportive community for and advancing the successes of graduate students from underserved backgrounds.

What projects are you working on?

Currently, I am focused on several key initiatives. I am preparing to send appointment letters for the upcoming cohort of The Academy at the GSBS (Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) training program — IMSD T32 Grant program (Initiative to Maximize Student Development). Additionally, I am organizing the next Academy Training meeting, compiling various end-of-year reports, and coordinating an outreach event for undergraduate students from the University of Houston-Downtown campus. This event will allow students to visit our campus and gain insights into the Graduate School.

What excites you the most about working for the Graduate School?

I truly enjoy working with students, and what excites me the most is the opportunity to help develop future leaders. It’s gratifying to be part of a process that supports students’ growth and success.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy running, riding my bike, and indulging in spicy food.

What skills do you find most valuable in your work?

The skills I lean into the most are effective communication, project management, and leadership. As a strategic thinker, I also focus on measuring outcomes to guide the planning of future projects.

What is your favorite memory at the Graduate School?

My favorite memories include hosting a McNair TRIO group (a program designed to help underserved college students prepare for graduate school) for a campus visit which included a tour of a Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (MID) lab, as well as my first staff retreat at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. I enjoy connecting with people and any time I get a chance to do so, it fuels me.
