Our research involves understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathology of acute cerebral ischemia and intracerebral hemorrhage, with emphasis on calcium related signal transduction, protein phosphorylation, transcription factors, apoptosis, and inflammatory response. Utilizing behavioral animal models, we are also investigating the effect of motor and cognitive activities on neuronal plasticity and delayed recovery from stroke. Using relevant animal models, including transgenic mice, we are evaluating new clinically relevant experimental pharmacotherapies with different mechanisms of action targeting the acute and recovery phase of stroke and ICH pathology.
