New Student Orientation

All entering Degree-Seeking students will begin their studies with a mandatory week-long orientation. This in-depth experience provides the foundation for a successful start to graduate school and an introduction to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) community.

    The George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building (BSRB/Mitchell Building) is the home of the UT MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston. The building is a part of the large UT MD Anderson campus.

    Located at 6767 Bertner Avenue, Houston TX 77030, it is immediately adjacent to (south of) the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons.The nearest parking location is TMC Garage 15 (The McGovern Commons Garage) at 6550 Bertner Avenue, Houston TX 77030. For information on additional parking please click Texas Medical Center Visitor Parking.

  • STUDENT AMENITIES

    The student coffee bar, located at GSBS reception (BSRB S3.8328), is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

    The GSBS Commons, located near the coffee bar, is open 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, for studying, gathering, and/or drinking coffee.

    The Student Computer Lab (BSRB S3.8112) is open and available 24 hours a day with badge access.

    The Career Development Library provides career and professional development books for students. Located adjacent to the coffee bar in BSRB, students can check out books on various career fields, job searches, leadership, communication, and a variety of professional development topics.

    A kitchenette is available for student use on the 4th floor of Clinical Research Building (CRB/Tan Zone). Take elevator J or the NN stairs to the 4th floor and walk across the skybridge.

    Other UTHealth Houston amenities available to students, such as the recreation center, dining services, bookstores, etc., can be found at UTHealth Houston Central Student Portal.

    The Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center Library (HAM/ TMC Library) is located in the Jesse H. Jones Library Building on John Freeman Blvd (near the Medical School Building).

    UT MD Anderson Research Medical Library is located in Pickens Academic Tower at UT MD Anderson.

  • PARKING/SHUTTLE/HOUSING

    Parking and Transportation

    Parking across the Texas Medical Center (TMC) can be a bit tricky and confusing; we encourage students to review information and guidance on utilizing the shuttle services available and when considering parking options. Shuttle services are available to students and employees to facilitate transporting from one building to another within the TMC.

    Information on TMC, UT MD Anderson, and UTHealth Houston Parking and shuttle services as well as Metro City bus and light rail routes can be found can be found in the Student Life page.

    Graduate School student ID badges feature a dual logo and give students access to shuttles at both institutions. Shuttles operate Monday-Friday.

    University Housing

    UTHealth Houston University Housing is available for students within the TMC.

    A GSBS Housing Survey is disseminated to all students once a year to provide further guidance and information on assisting incoming and current students with additional housing options. Results of the survey can be found on our Student Life page.

    Career Development

    The Office of Career Development is devoted to students’ current and future success. Services include career advising, career planning using the individual development plan (IDP), internship navigation and integration into students’ educational experience, and assistance with job readiness tools (i.e. CV/resume, LinkedIn profiles). The office also offers career development workshops and seminars throughout the year.

  • FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

    GSBS Funding Opportunities

    Awards

    Competitive awards totaling nearly $1.5 million in support are given out each year through generous philanthropic support from the community.

    Each year, the Graduate School provides funding to help students defray the costs of attending scientific meetings and off-site scientific courses through travel awards. Students participating in career development activities like the IDP are eligible for additional funds.

    Fellowships and Scholarships

    Provided through philanthropic gifts, fellowships provide full stipend support for one to three years. Scholarships are typically cash awards given directly to students.

    External Fellowships

    The Office of Career Development also provides fellowship navigation services to support students in pursuing external fellowship opportunities offered by state and national organizations. These fellowships can provide funding for tuition, stipends, and research-related expenses. Services include feedback on application materials, curated resources to help students identify and prepare competitive applications, and guidance through the application process. The office also offers seminars and workshops on fellowship preparation, as well as a proposal development course each semester focused on National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellowship applications.
