Professor
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center at Houston
Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology
Dr. Shen’s lab specializes in systems biology and functional precision medicine, translating novel mechanisms into innovative therapeutic and clinical trial strategies. His interdisciplinary team integrates cutting-edge bioengineering, data science, and in vitro/in vivo biology to address biological questions and clinical unmet needs from unique perspectives. His research interests encompass patient-derived cancer immune models, the neural/microbial gut-brain axis, intravital imaging, cancer metastasis/metabolism, and GI stem cells. Previously, Dr. Shen chaired the steering committees of the NCI Patient-Derived Model Consortium (PDMC) and Tissue Engineering Collaboratives (TEC). He served as Director of the Duke Woo Center for Precision Health and as Cancer Track Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting. He has been recognized with the NSF CAREER Award and the CPRIT Established PI Award. Additionally, Dr. Shen is an accomplished entrepreneur, having founded and led multiple biotech startups as CEO. These ventures have pioneered novel diagnostics and therapeutics technologies that advanced to clinical trials, raising over a hundred million dollars in venture capital funding.
