We take an educated, individualized approach to serving our stakeholders and strategically developing and implementing new programs and resources that support the training of our students and prepare them for the next steps in their career.

 The Office of Career Development at the GSBS is devoted to student success with dedicated staff members to guide you to the best career path based on your individual interests and goals. Services include:

  • Individual career advising
  • Make an appointment using Calendly
  • Career planning using the individual development plan (IDP)
  • Internship navigation and integration into student’s educational experience
  • Career exploration seminars/programming for GSBS students
  • Assistance with job readiness tools: CV/resume, LinkedIn profiles
  • Promotion of job, postdoc, internship, and fellowship opportunities
  • External fellowship and biosketch advising

Meet Our Team

Raquel Salinas, PhD, Assistant Dean, Career & Alumni Engagement

Dr. Salinas specializes in individual development plans, career exploration, job searching, interview preparation, and applying for NIH fellowship applications. She also assists MS students with graduate applications.

Laura Rademacher, MEd, Manager, Career & Alumni Engagement

Laura specializes in career development, individual development plans, and internships. She offers a variety of services including career-related document reviews, mock interviews, internship advising, and general career advising. Laura is the primary contact for internship advising/onboarding and CV/resume reviews.

Sarah Herzog, PhD, Program Manager, Training Grants & Fellowships

Dr. Herzog specializes in fellowship development for students and training grant support for faculty and staff. Her role includes resource development for fellowships and training grants, and document review for external fellowships. She is the primary contact for NIH fellowship application document reviews and biosketch reviews. Doctoral research students compete in fourth annual research competition

The UTHealth Houston Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences hosted its fourth annual T1-T4 in 3 (Minutes) Translational Challenge on June 10. The eight in-person presenters and one online presenter, Natasha Garcia-Rodriguez, competed for monetary prizes to support their research.

Recent Genetics and Epigenetics graduate Melissa Frasca, PhD, uncovered that the complex MutSgamma acts earlier in the meiotic chromosomal segregation pathway than previously expected. Her findings in the lab of Francesca Cole, PhD, provide new insight into the mechanisms that ensure accurate chromosome segregation and may help advance future infertility research.

Kopchick Fellow Richa Nayak investigates the role of “jumping genes” in stem cells and human disease

Genetics and Epigenetics PhD candidate Richa Nayak is investigating how “jumping genes” — ancient viral sequences embedded in our DNA — are regulated in adult stem cells. These transposons can reactivate with aging and have been linked to cancer, neurodegeneration, and autoimmune disorders. Nayak studies how stem cells keep these elements in check and what happens when control is lost. Her research aims to uncover mechanisms with potential to inform new therapeutic approaches for human disease.
