Mitochondrial damage has been associated with several diseases, including cancer. Dysfunctional mitochondria (DyM) are eliminated via a unique process called mitochondrial autophagy (mitophagy). Understanding mechanisms of exclusion of damaged mitochondria is therefore key for discerning therapeutic susceptibilities in cancer cells. Recently, we and others identified a novel non-nuclear role of the master DNA damage sensor protein Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) in regulating mitophagy in multiple cancer cell lines.
